Pigmentation after the summer: which treatment suits your skin best?
After a sunny summer, you often notice that pigment spots have become more clearly visible. Perhaps your freckles are darker, you see new sun spots, or you continue to suffer from discoloration after acne. Autumn is the perfect time to address pigmentation, but which treatment is actually the most suitable?
The answer is not the same for everyone. Pigment is a collective term for various types of discoloration, all of which have a different cause and depth in the skin. That is why we always start with a professional skin analysis. Our skin specialists assess what type of pigment you have and draw up a personal treatment plan for the best results.
Why does pigment get worse after the summer?
During the summer, the skin produces extra melanin as protection against UV radiation. As a result, existing pigment spots can become darker or new discolorations can occur. Often the damage only becomes clearly visible when your summer tan slowly fades.
By starting a treatment program in autumn or winter, you give your skin the best chance to recover safely and effectively.
1. Pigment due to sun damage
Do you suffer from sun spots (lentigo solaris), age spots, or freckles that keep getting darker in the summer? Then it is likely that this is pigment caused by UV damage.
The best treatment: Lumecca IPL
Lumecca IPL has been specially developed to treat superficial pigment in a very targeted manner. The light flashes are absorbed by the pigment, after which the body removes it naturally.
Advantages of Lumecca IPL:
- Often visible results after just one treatment.
- Very effective for sun spots and freckles.
- Improves overall skin tone simultaneously.
- Can also reduce redness and superficial blood vessels.
For the best results, we usually recommend a course of three to four treatments, depending on your skin.
Maintenance for a long-lasting result
After an IPL program, it is important to keep the skin healthy. For this, the PRX Plus peeling and the BioRePeel are excellent maintenance treatments. These stimulate skin renewal, improve skin quality, and help to limit new pigment formation as much as possible.
2. Melasma (hormonal pigment)
Melasma is a chronic, hormonal form of pigmentation that is often visible on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, or chin. This form of pigment arises due to hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, or contraception, among other things, and can quickly worsen due to sunlight.
Melasma requires a different approach than sun spots. An IPL treatment is usually not the right choice for this.
The best treatment: peels and microneedling
For melasma, we often achieve the best results with a combination of:
- PRX Plus peeling
- Microneedling
In particular, a course of three microneedling treatments, combined with the PRX Plus peeling, can make the skin visibly more even and help suppress flare-ups. Because melasma is a chronic skin condition, we often recommend an annual maintenance treatment to maintain the result for as long as possible.
3. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, occurs after the skin has experienced inflammation or damage. Think, for example, of pigment spots that remain after acne, wounds, or skin irritation.
The best treatment: microneedling
Microneedling stimulates the skin's natural recovery process and accelerates skin renewal. This allows excess pigment to gradually fade.
For an even better result, we regularly combine microneedling with the BioRePeel. This combination stimulates cell renewal, refines skin texture, and helps remove pigment faster.
Why a personal treatment plan is so important
Not every pigment responds the same way to a treatment. The cause, the depth of the pigment, your skin type, and your medical history all play a role in choosing the right approach.
That is why our skin specialists always assess your skin first before giving treatment advice. Sometimes one treatment is sufficient, but we often achieve the most beautiful and durable results with a combination of treatments and the right home skincare.
Don't forget your SPF
Whichever pigment treatment you choose, good sun protection remains essential. Daily use of an SPF not only helps prevent new pigment formation but also ensures that the results achieved remain beautiful for longer.
Are you unsure what type of pigment you have?
That is very understandable. Many types of pigment look similar, while they require a completely different treatment. During a personal skin consultation, our skin specialists carefully map out your skin and advise which treatment best matches your skin and wishes.
Together, we will draw up a treatment plan with which we not only tackle existing pigment spots but also work on a healthy, even, and radiant skin in the long term.
